Nineteen-ninety six was a tremendous year and Duval-Leroy Vintage “Femme de Champagne” 1996 is truly an exquisite presentation of the year. Founded in 1859 in the heart of Champagne, the Duval-Leroy house has a long-standing reputation for crafting elegant, refined champagnes that celebrate both tradition and innovation. The house has been particularly noted for its commitment to highlighting the influence of women in Champagne, reflected in their iconic “Femme de Champagne” line, which balances strength, finesse, and delicate femininity.
The 1996 vintage is celebrated among Champagne enthusiasts as a particularly strong year, marked by ideal weather conditions that allowed grapes to achieve a remarkable balance of ripeness and acidity. The result is a wine that is structured, nuanced, and endlessly elegant. From my own experience with this vintage, you can expect flavors of baked apple, dried apricot, toasted brioche, and subtle honeyed notes, with a delicate minerality that adds freshness. In my experience with the vintage this is slightly oxidized, which is natural for a champagne of this age. Personally, I think it gives the wine an added layer of complexity, enhancing its richness and depth.
This magnum format, beyond its striking presence, is perfect for sharing with friends and family, yielding roughly 12–14 generous glasses. Its size helps preserve bubbles and freshness, ensuring every pour delights. This particular bottle was carefully stored in a French cave until last year, and since its arrival at our DASH cellar, it has been maintained under optimal conditions, ready to offer its full depth and character.
