Hey, Holly here! Two of my favorite meals are caviar and champagne and that's few culinary experiences as luxurious, iconic, and timeless as caviar. From the tables of the Met Opera and The Plaza in New York City to elegant celebrations around the world, the delicate pearls of premium caviar symbolize celebration, refinement, and unforgettable flavor. Now, thanks to our exciting collaboration with Marshallberg Caviar in Happy Valley, North Carolina we can bring it to you!
If you are new to caviar then listen in!
What Makes Caviar So Coveted?
Caviar isn’t just food, but it’s a sensory experience. What makes it so sought after are the unique texture, balanced saltiness, and subtle, buttery complexity that vary by sturgeon species, maturation, and environment. These tiny gems burst with flavor, carrying a briny sweetness and a smooth, rich mouthfeel that delights even the most discerning palates. Because quality caviar requires patience, precision, and exceptional care it remains one of the most prized delicacies in the world.
The Marshallberg Process: Craftsmanship and Care
At Marshallberg Caviar, excellence is intentional. Their artisanal approach begins with sustainably raised sturgeon in the pristine waters nestled into the foothills of North Carolina. Here, each fish is carefully monitored to ensure optimal health and maturity. Once ready, the roe is harvested with respect and precision, then gently rinsed, lightly salted, and sorted by size and texture. This thoughtful process preserves the delicate integrity of each pearl and allows the natural characteristics of the caviar to shine.
What is Osetra Caviar?
Among the world’s elite varieties, Osetra caviar is celebrated for its nuanced flavor profile and unrivaled texture. Larger than many other types, Osetra pearls range from golden to deep brown, often with a firm yet creamy consistency. The taste is unmistakably luxurious rich, slightly nutty, and layered with "oceanic" complexity that lingers delicately on the palate.
What to Pair With Caviar?
Part of the magic of caviar lies in the way it’s served and paired. Classic accompaniments let the flavor of the roe remain center stage:
-
Pearl Spoons: Unlike metal utensils, pearl or mother-of-pearl spoons won’t alter the delicate taste of caviar, ensuring every bite is pure luxury. You can purchase Mother-of-Pearl Spoons exclusively from DASH.
-
Crème Fraîche: A cool, tangy base that enhances texture and flavor without overpowering. Many fine cheese isles in grocery stores provide creme fraiche. Sour creme can also be substituted or you may make your own.
-
Blini: Light, airy pancakes that offer just enough structure without distracting from the caviar itself. We sell Michel de France Blinis exclusively at DASH.
- Latkes: Made primarily from grated potatoes and onions, then fried until crisp and golden, latkes are rooted in Eastern Europe. Crisp on the outside and tender on the inside, they’re typically served hot with classic accompaniments like sour cream. I personally perfer Linda's Gourmet Latkes out of Los Angeles.
-
Chilled Vodka or Champagne: Traditional pairings that cleanse the palate and elevate the experience with bubbles and bracing spirits beautifully complement the briny richness of the roe. As special as the tasting experience is - you'll want to shop our rare and vintage champagne collection. I personally like Ostera Caviar with crisp modern champagne like Louis Roederer Champagne.
- Purchase Mother-of-Pearl Spoons, Caviar, Blinis, and Latkes at our Unionn Square location in Hickory, North Carolina. We carry caviar throughout the holiday season in-store and ship to the lower 48 states.
