trail mix, chocolate covered pretzels, espresso beans, chocolate candies, fall colors

Autumn Trail Mix

I love this mix because it has a little bit of everything—sweet, salty, crunchy, and just a little sophisticated. The combination of chocolate-covered treats, crisp pretzels, espresso beans, popcorn, and tart cranberries gives it plenty of texture and flavor, while the fall colors make it especially pretty for the season. I like to serve it in a bowl for casual snacking, but it also makes an easy treat for parties, teacher gifts, hostess gifts, or individual fall favors.

Prep time: 10 minutes
Yield: About 8 cups

Ingredients:

1 ½ cups milk chocolate-covered almonds

¾ cup chocolate-covered espresso beans

1 ½ cups mini pretzels

1 cup mini dark chocolate-covered pretzels

1 cup fall-colored candy-coated chocolates, in shades of orange, brown, cream, and green

1 ½ cups chocolate-covered popcorn

¾ cup yogurt-covered cranberries

½ cup green candy-coated chocolates or chocolate-covered almonds

Instructions:

  1. Add all of the ingredients to a large mixing bowl. Gently toss with your hands or a large spoon until everything is evenly distributed, taking care not to break the pretzels or chocolate-covered popcorn.

  2. Transfer the trail mix to a serving bowl, or store it in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Because so many of the ingredients are chocolate-covered, avoid storing it in a warm area or in direct sunlight.

For the prettiest presentation, reserve a small handful of the colorful candies, yogurt-covered cranberries, and pretzels, then scatter them over the top just before serving.

For Individual Treats or Gifts:

For individual party treats, portion about ¾ to 1 cup per person into clear cellophane bags and tie them with black, cream, rust, deep green, or natural linen ribbon. A simple kraft-paper tag keeps the presentation elegant.

For hostess gifts, teacher gifts, or neighbor gifts, fill a 12–16 oz. clear jar with the trail mix and add a fabric or parchment circle beneath the lid. Finish it with twine or velvet ribbon. I love the idea of adding this to a fall gift basket!

For a gathering, prepare several small individual cups or cones for a fun and easy way to share a treat with your guests.
